Response to Kwarans Voice Movement’s Misguided Rejection of APC Youth Stakeholders’ Zoning Call

Our attention has been drawn to a recent statement by a group identifying as the Kwarans Voice Movement (KVM), in which they dismissed the principled call by Kwara Central APC Youth Stakeholders advocating for the zoning of the 2027 gubernatorial ticket to Kwara North. We consider KVM’s statement not only unfortunate but also riddled with contradictions, historical revisionism, and an outright disregard for the values of fairness and equity that sustain our democratic union. The claim by KVM that zoning is unconstitutional is a red herring. Zoning, like federal character and rotation, is a political convention adopted by major parties including the APC to ensure inclusion, balance, and justice in a diverse society. It has never required constitutional codification to be legitimate. From the presidency to local councils, zoning remains an accepted tool for power-sharing and political stability. Since 1999, Kwara South and Kwara Central have both produced governors multiple times. In contrast, Kwara North has not produced a governor in over 24 years of democratic rule. This glaring imbalance is what responsible leaders and groups within Kwara Central are working to correct - not out of charity, but in defense of justice. The APC Youth Stakeholders from Kwara Central, and other political leaders and stakeholders from the zone, are not acting out of weakness or political desperation. Rather, they are demonstrating maturity, selflessness, and strategic foresight - qualities that must be celebrated, not condemned. KVM’s reference to the 2019 elections and Kwara North’s supposed lack of support for their own is a deeply misleading and divisive argument. APC’s 2019 victory was a Kwara-wide movement. It is inaccurate - and frankly unfair - to scapegoat an entire senatorial district for the outcome of a democratic process. Kwara North has remained a loyal and supportive region under the APC-led administration. The time has come to reward that loyalty with equity - not excuses. True development is driven by shared ownership and inclusive governance. A Kwara where one region is perpetually sidelined from the highest political office cannot be a united or peaceful one. What the Kwara Central APC Youth Stakeholders are advocating is a just, forward-looking path that unites our people through fairness. Their call for zoning does not eliminate competition; it simply urges the party to prioritize a region that has long been left behind in the power equation. That is not discrimination. That is corrective justice. We reaffirm and strongly support the call for the 2027 APC gubernatorial ticket to be zoned to Kwara North. It is the right thing to do, and it is the honorable thing for our party to uphold. We call on the leadership of the APC at the state and national levels to recognize this moral moment and act accordingly. We must never allow narrow political interests to drown the voices of justice.
